Are retinal holes and retinal tears the same?

No. Retinal holes are different from retinal tears retinal tears. retinal caused by pulling of the retina by the condensed vitreous whereas holes are formed by atrophic degeneration of a thinned retina. Retinal holes are asymptomatic whereas retinal tears cause symptoms of flashes. Retina specialists mostly treat retinal tears due to their high risk of developing into retinal detachment whereas asymptomatic retinal holes are observed
