Is retinal detachment an emergency?

Yes, it as an emergency/ urgency. general ophthalmologists who after suspicion refer these cases to retina specialists on an emergency basis. Retina specialists after examination, consultation and counseling prefer to perform the surgery at the earliest within days. Consulting a retina specialist is advisable at the earliest.
The duration of time between the onset of symptoms and the time of surgery is the most important factor determining the visual recovery by the patient. The earlier the patient is operated the better is the visual recovery. Some amount of irreversible loss (to the tune of 5- 10%)may be there in spite of surgery being done within a weeks time. retina( especially outer retina containing photoreceptors) derives its blood supply predominantly from the underlying structures. once the retina is detached there is a loss of blood supply to the photoreceptors. so a time-bound degenerative change to occurs in the outer retina as long as retina is detached. Hence it is of paramount importance to operating on these cases on the urgent/ emergency basis.
