What is retinal detachment?

Retina is a light-sensitive layer lining most of the inside of the eye. It firmly adheres to the retinal pigment epithelium. This layer of tissue captures the images and converts them into electric signals which are transmitted through the optic nerve to the brain. The separation of the retina from the back side of the eye (the underlying pigment epithelium ) is called retinal detachment The retinal detachment causes loss of vision, total or partial, depending on the extent of retinal detachment. In a few cases, the retina is torn leading to retinal detachment.
